Description
Rendered in lateral view, the adult male cranium is presented with the frontal bone anteriorly and the parietal bone posteriorly, their margins meeting along the coronal suture. A jagged fracture line tracks near the superior aspect of the vault, interrupting the normal serrated contour of the suture and extending across the frontal and parietal tables. Inferiorly, the zygomatic arch, maxilla, and mandible frame the facial skeleton, while the nasal aperture and conchae are visible within the nasal cavity. Teeth and alveolar processes remain intact. Fractures that cross or parallel the coronal suture raise practical questions about force transmission across the calvaria and the likelihood of associated intracranial injury. Near the anterolateral vault, disruption of the inner table can correlate with epidural hematoma when meningeal vessels are torn, and a coronal-adjacent fracture also helps teach why scalp lacerations may mask deeper injury in the setting of a normal external contour. The side projection is useful because you can read anterior to posterior step-offs, assess displacement, and relate the fracture trajectory to landmarks such as the frontal squama, parietal eminence, and temporal lines. A common pitfall. Assuming sutures are fractures, or vice versa.
