Description
Positioned deep to the cranial dura mater, the arachnoid mater forms a thin, translucent meningeal layer that bridges over the cerebral sulci rather than dipping into them, leaving the subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia mater. Superiorly and posteriorly across the cerebral hemispheres, you would expect to appreciate the smooth arachnoid surface spanning the convexity while the pia closely invests the gyri, and the cerebrospinal fluid compartment contains trabeculae and the major superficial cerebral vessels. Inferiorly toward the cranial base and continuing into the vertebral canal, the arachnoid encloses the spinal cord within the dural sac, with spinal nerve roots traversing the subarachnoid space on their way to the intervertebral foramina. Color separation of arteries, veins, and nerves supports rapid orientation in the head and upper thorax. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this layer matters because the subarachnoid space is where blood accumulates in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, tracking along cisterns around the brainstem and into the spinal canal rather than remaining confined to a dural compartment. The arachnoid is also central to CSF dynamics: arachnoid granulations protrude into dural venous sinuses to resorb CSF, and obstruction or scarring after meningitis can contribute to communicating hydrocephalus. For procedural anatomy, the spinal arachnoid defines the CSF target for lumbar puncture, where the needle passes dura and arachnoid to enter the subarachnoid space below the conus medullaris. Neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses can use this composition to teach meningeal layers in context with superficial cerebral vasculature, cranial nerves, and the cervicothoracic spinal cord, while clinical texts can pair it with discussions of subdural versus subarachnoid bleeding and the rationale for lumbar puncture.
