Description
Running from the atlas to the coccyx in a lateral projection, the vertebral column is rendered with cervical vertebrae superiorly, thoracic vertebrae in the midline, and the lumbar spine highlighted in blue, terminating inferiorly in the sacrum and coccyx. Within the lumbar segment, the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5) sits immediately superior to the sacral base at the lumbosacral junction, its vertebral body anterior to the vertebral arch and its spinous process projecting posteriorly. Flared transverse processes extend laterally from the L5 vertebral arch, and the intervertebral discs are indicated by pale annular rings between adjacent vertebral bodies, including the L4 to L5 and L5 to S1 levels. L5 carries the transition from lumbar lordosis to sacral kyphosis, so even in a neutral lateral curve it anchors concepts of sagittal alignment and load transfer across the lumbosacral angle. This is the level most often discussed in relation to L5 to S1 degenerative disc disease, isthmic spondylolisthesis from pars interarticularis defects, and foraminal compromise affecting the exiting L5 nerve root. A key landmark. Teaching and clinical teams can deploy this plate in gross anatomy, orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine modules, and radiology correlation when introducing lateral lumbar X-ray and sagittal CT or MRI orientation, with the blue emphasis guiding learners to the L1 to L5 segment while preserving the cervical, thoracic, and sacrococcygeal context.
