Description
Centered in the lower lateral neck, the jugulo-omohyoid lymph nodes are positioned along the distal internal jugular chain, deep to the sternocleidomastoid and adjacent to the internal jugular vein as it descends toward the venous angle. Superiorly, the chain relates to the carotid sheath contents, while inferiorly it approaches the clavicle and the root of the neck; the nodes sit near the intermediate tendon and inferior belly of the omohyoid as that strap muscle crosses the cervical vessels. Green lymphatic vessels converge on these nodes from the lateral neck, with nearby superficial tributaries coursing over the deep fascia. Orientation is clear. Bony landmarks such as the mandible and clavicle frame the field, with cervical vertebrae and posterior neck musculature providing depth. For head and neck clinicians, jugulo-omohyoid nodes matter because they represent a common sentinel region for lymphatic drainage from the oral cavity, especially the lateral tongue, and they often become enlarged in squamous cell carcinoma metastasis. Their relationship to the internal jugular vein and the ansa cervicalis on the carotid sheath makes this an anatomic hotspot during selective neck dissection (levels III and IV), where preserving venous structures and strap muscle function depends on knowing exactly what lies deep to the sternocleidomastoid. Fine-needle aspiration targets here frequently rely on these same surface and fascial relationships.
