Description
Positioned in the upper cervical chain, the jugulodigastric (tonsillar) lymph nodes sit deep to the sternocleidomastoid near the angle of the mandible, at the level where the posterior belly of the digastric crosses the internal jugular vein. A lateral male neck view logically places these nodes anterolateral to the upper cervical vertebrae and inferior to the parotid region, with lymphatic vessels converging toward the jugular trunk along the carotid sheath. Nearby neurovascular context typically includes the cervical plexus branches coursing superficially across the sternocleidomastoid and deeper structures aligned with the internal carotid artery and vagus nerve. Small but decisive anatomy. Clinically, jugulodigastric lymphadenopathy is a common presenting sign in acute tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess, and it remains a key palpation target in head and neck cancer screening because it receives lymphatic drainage from the palatine tonsil, posterior oral cavity, and portions of the pharynx. This lateral perspective is the one clinicians mentally map during examination: the node’s relationship to the mandibular angle and the posterior belly of digastric helps distinguish it from parotid and submandibular nodes.
