Description
Mandibular dentition is presented in anatomical position within a transparent outline of the mandible, allowing the dental arcade to be read as a continuous curve from the midline posteriorly. At the anterior midline, the mandibular central and lateral incisors sit medial to the canine teeth, followed distally by first and second premolars and then first, second, and third molars along the posterior segments of the jaw. A single mandibular canine is highlighted in blue, positioned at the junction between the incisor segment and the premolar segment, where the arch begins to turn more posteriorly and laterally. Occlusal relationships are implied by the alignment of the crowns, with the roots not emphasized. Emphasis on the mandibular canine makes sense. This tooth has the longest root in the lower arch, occupies a key corner of the dental arcade, and often guides lateral excursions (canine guidance) when present and properly positioned. Orthodontic crowding frequently expresses in the canine region because eruption timing and limited arch length can leave the canine displaced or rotated, and surgical exposure with traction is a common intervention when impaction occurs. In dental trauma, canine root prominence and position also matter when planning splinting and assessing adjacent periodontal support.
