Description

Anterior neck anatomy is rendered with the larynx superiorly, continuing inferiorly into the trachea with its C shaped cartilaginous rings, and the esophagus positioned posterior to the airway in the prevertebral plane. Flanking the upper trachea, the right and left lobes of the thyroid gland sit anterolaterally and are joined across the midline by the isthmus, typically spanning the second to fourth tracheal rings. Superior to the thyroid, the laryngeal framework occupies the visceral compartment, and the upper apices of the lungs are included inferiorly to show continuity into the thorax. Tight anatomy. Clinical interpretation depends on these relationships. Thyroid enlargement or an anterior neck mass displaces and can narrow the tracheal lumen, a concern in goiter, thyroiditis, or thyroid carcinoma, and the proximity of the esophagus explains compressive dysphagia complaints that accompany large multinodular glands. For airway management, the anterior view clarifies the target for cricothyrotomy at the cricothyroid membrane between thyroid and cricoid cartilages, and it also sets the level for emergency tracheostomy and the location of the thyroid isthmus that may overlie the operative field. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching of the cervical visceral compartment, endocrine modules on thyroid topography, and otolaryngology or anesthesia materials covering anterior airway access and neck mass evaluation. It also suits patient facing education on goiter related airway symptoms and preoperative planning figures for thyroidectomy or tracheostomy technique. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
