Description
Radiating from the pulmonary trunk, the right and left pulmonary arteries course laterally at the level of the tracheal bifurcation, with the right pulmonary artery passing posterior to the ascending aorta and superior vena cava and the left pulmonary artery arching anterior to the left main bronchus near the ligamentum arteriosum. As the vessels enter the lung hila, lobar and segmental pulmonary arteries accompany the branching bronchial tree, remaining centrally placed within each bronchopulmonary segment while giving rise distally to smaller muscular arteries and arterioles within the parenchyma. An x-ray style rendering favors the high-contrast, arborizing silhouette of the pulmonary arterial tree against darker lung fields. Orientation is thoracic and frontal by implication.
