Arising from the pulmonary trunk, the right and left pulmonary arteries sweep laterally toward their respective hila, then divide into lobar and segmental branches that travel alongside the bronchial tree in a classic x-ray style projection. Within each lung, the arterial arborization mirrors the bronchopulmonary segments, with segmental arteries running centrally and giving off progressively smaller muscular arteries and arterioles toward the peripheral acini. Semi-transparent lung parenchyma keeps the vascular map legible while preserving the lobar contours and fissure lines. Small vessels dominate the periphery. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters when you need to correlate ventilation and perfusion at the lobar or sublobar level. In acute pulmonary embolism, emboli often lodge at lobar or segmental bifurcations, and understanding the expected branching pattern helps explain wedge-shaped infarcts, perfusion defects on V/Q scintigraphy, and the distribution of right heart strain.
