Description
Arising along the posterior border of the lesser wing of the sphenoid, the sphenoparietal sinus tracks laterally at the sphenoid parietal junction and courses toward the cavernous sinus. Medial to it lie the body of the sphenoid and the region of the sella turcica, while the anterior cranial fossa sits superiorly and the middle cranial fossa floor extends inferiorly across the greater wing and squamous temporal bone. The sinus runs within the dural venous channels adjacent to the calvarial inner table, near the meningeal grooves that transmit the middle meningeal vessels. Small dural tributaries from the sphenoid and parietal region can be appreciated converging on this pathway. Sphenoparietal sinus anatomy matters when teaching the dural venous system around the cavernous sinus, because its course explains how infection, thrombosis, or traumatic bleeding can propagate in the parasellar region. Surgeons working near the anterior clinoid process and optic canal, including approaches for paraclinoid aneurysms or cavernous sinus lesions, use this relationship to anticipate venous bleeding when elevating dura along the lesser wing. Variant drainage is common. A clear rendering makes those variants easier to discuss.
