Description

Lateral anatomy of the male trunk frames the diaphragm as a domed musculotendinous partition spanning the inferior thoracic aperture, attaching peripherally to the xiphoid process, internal surfaces of ribs 7 to 12 and their costal cartilages, and posteriorly to the lumbar vertebrae via the right and left crura and arcuate ligaments. Anteriorly and superiorly, the costal diaphragm sits deep to the red intercostal muscles and rib cage, while posteriorly it relates to the thoracic spine and the thoracolumbar junction. The central tendon occupies the superior aspect of the muscle, and the three principal apertures are implied: the caval opening in the right leaf of the tendon, the esophageal hiatus within the right crus, and the aortic hiatus posterior to the diaphragm between the crura, closely related to the vertebral column. Spatial context is reinforced by the visible ribs, vertebrae, and pelvis. This side view matters because it clarifies how diaphragmatic fibers shorten and descend during inspiration while the rib cage expands through intercostal action, a pairing that students often misinterpret when looking only at anterior views.
