Description
Running along the lateral nasal wall, the anterior dilator naris muscle is shown as a superficial slip at the margin of the nostril, blending with the dermis over the ala nasi and adjacent nasal vestibule. Its fibers lie anterior and slightly inferior to the upper lateral cartilage and sit superficial to the greater alar cartilage (lower lateral cartilage), following the curve of the mobile nasal cartilages. From this lateral perspective, the muscle’s position at the anterolateral naris is clear, where it relates medially to the rim of the nostril and laterally to the alar lobule and nasolabial soft tissues. Subtle anatomy, real consequences. The anterior dilator naris contributes to widening the external nasal valve by pulling laterally on the alar rim, a point that becomes clinically relevant in patients with dynamic nasal valve collapse who complain of obstruction during inspiration or exercise. This view also helps distinguish muscular contributors to alar flare from structural problems of the lower lateral cartilage, a practical distinction when planning functional rhinoplasty maneuvers such as alar batten grafting or lateral crural strut grafting, or when placing botulinum toxin for unwanted alar flaring. Facial anatomy and ENT teaching resources can use this plate when covering muscles of facial expression (including the nasal group) and their relationships to the alar cartilages in surface anatomy.
