Description

Centered on the dorsum of the male foot, the arcuate artery courses transversely across the bases of the metatarsals, just distal to the tarsometatarsal joints. From its convex distal margin, dorsal metatarsal arteries run anteriorly toward the web spaces, where dorsal digital branches continue to the toes and communicate with the plantar circulation via perforating branches. Beneath the vessels, the tarsal bones (navicular and cuneiforms), metatarsals, and phalanges provide clear osseous landmarks for orientation. Superficial dorsal veins track a parallel but more variable path as they converge proximally toward the dorsal venous arch. A dorsal rendering like this matters because the arcuate artery is the key distributor for the dorsal metatarsal vessels and a practical landmark during dorsal approaches to the midfoot and forefoot. Injury to a dorsal metatarsal artery can complicate exposure for tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) fixation, metatarsal osteotomy, or dorsal incision and drainage, and the illustration makes the predictable segmental pattern easier to anticipate. Pedal perfusion assessment also benefits from this anatomy: the dorsalis pedis artery often continues as the arcuate artery, and anatomic variation can help explain a weak dorsal pulse despite intact plantar flow. Small vessel disease shows up here first. Use this plate for lower limb anatomy teaching, podiatry and orthopedic surgery atlases, and vascular surgery or wound-care publications that discuss dorsal foot flaps, diabetic forefoot ulceration, or revascularization planning. It also fits radiology teaching when correlating surface anatomy with Doppler ultrasound of the dorsalis pedis and dorsal metatarsal arteries.
