Description

Dominating the upper abdomen, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant with its right and left lobes separated anteriorly by the falciform ligament, while the gallbladder rests on the visceral surface near the inferior margin. Red arterial channels track from the celiac trunk into the common hepatic artery, giving rise to the proper hepatic artery and its right and left hepatic branches as they course superiorly toward the porta hepatis. Blue venous pathways converge from the small and large intestines into the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein, joining to form the hepatic portal vein that ascends posterior to the pancreas and enters the liver alongside the hepatic artery and bile duct.
