Description
Seen in lateral profile, the upper limb is extended from the shoulder to the hand with the brachial vasculature coursing through the brachium and into the antebrachium alongside the major muscle compartments. Proximally, vessels descend along the medial aspect of the arm near the biceps brachii, while posteriorly the triceps brachii forms the dominant superficial mass. At the cubital region, the arterial pathway divides into forearm branches that track between the flexor and extensor groups, with superficial veins running more subcutaneously and crossing the elbow toward the dorsum of the hand. Clear layering. A lateral presentation clarifies relationships that get lost in anterior teaching plates, especially the way vessels skirt muscle borders and emerge at predictable intervals near the elbow where palpation, venipuncture, and compression are performed. The brachial artery bifurcation into the radial and ulnar arteries at the level of the neck of the radius is a practical landmark for blood pressure cuffs, arterial cannulation planning, and interpreting pulse deficits after supracondylar humerus fractures. For surgeons, this angle also helps when thinking through lateral approaches around the distal humerus and proximal forearm, where swelling can obscure the usual medial landmarks and superficial veins can mislead.
