Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the male upper limb, the brachial artery descends medial to the biceps brachii and toward the cubital fossa, where it typically bifurcates into the radial and ulnar arteries in the proximal forearm. Superficial venous channels, classically the cephalic vein laterally and the basilic vein medially, course in the subcutaneous tissue overlying the arm and forearm musculature, with a median cubital vein often bridging them across the anterior elbow. Forearm flexor groups lie anterior to the radius and ulna, their tendons converging distally toward the wrist and digits, while the hand skeleton (carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges) provides bony context beneath the distal tendons and vessels. Spatial relationships are clear. For teaching and clinical communication, an anterior view of arm vasculature clarifies why the cubital fossa is such a common access corridor, the brachial artery sits deep to the bicipital aponeurosis, and the median cubital vein remains the workhorse for phlebotomy and peripheral venous cannulation. That anatomy is not academic, inadvertent arterial puncture and median nerve irritation are recognized complications when superficial veins are small, scarred, or misidentified, and the proximity of artery and vein becomes tighter with elbow extension and a tourniquet. Surgical planning benefits too, since the cephalic vein is often selected for upper extremity venous cutdown or as a conduit in vascular procedures, and its lateral course contrasts cleanly with the more medial basilic system.
