Description
Oriented to the diaphragmatic (inferior) surface of a male heart, the coronary circulation is traced across the posterior walls of the ventricles with arteries rendered in red and cardiac veins in blue against a white myocardium. The right coronary artery courses in the right atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus toward the crux cordis, while the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery tracks in the left atrioventricular groove toward the posterior aspect of the left ventricle. Along the posterior interventricular sulcus, the posterior interventricular artery (posterior descending artery) runs inferiorly toward the apex, accompanied by the middle cardiac vein; more laterally, venous return converges toward the coronary sinus in the posterior atrioventricular groove. Clear vessel ostia and great-vessel cut surfaces sit superiorly at the base of the heart. An inferior perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the “back” of the heart, where dominance patterns decide whether the posterior interventricular artery arises from the right coronary artery or the circumflex. This is the territory implicated in inferior wall myocardial infarction, often with right ventricular involvement and atrioventricular nodal ischemia near the crux, a correlation that becomes obvious when you can follow the vessel paths along the diaphragmatic surface. Short and direct.
