Description

Medial orientation centers the body of the pubis as it approaches the midline of the bony pelvis, with the symphyseal surface presented as a smooth, oval to rectangular articular area for the fibrocartilaginous interpubic disc. Along the superior margin, the pubic crest and pubic tubercle sit anterosuperiorly, while the superior pubic ramus projects posterolaterally toward the acetabulum and the inferior pubic ramus sweeps inferolaterally toward the ischium. The animation subtly rotates through the medial aspect, clarifying how the symphyseal face transitions into the adjacent roughened attachment zones for the anterior and posterior pubic ligaments. Midline matters here. Clinically, the medial pubic body is the bony partner of the pubic symphysis, a common pain generator in osteitis pubis and a key landmark when teaching pelvic ring stability and patterns of anterior ring injury. Stepwise motion helps the viewer appreciate the planar nature of the symphyseal surface and how small variations in contour relate to diastasis on AP pelvis radiographs, postpartum symphyseal widening, and traumatic separation in anteroposterior compression injuries. Seeing the pubic crest, tubercle, and symphyseal face in sequence also supports correlation with inguinal anatomy, since the pubic tubercle anchors the inguinal ligament and guides orientation for open and laparoscopic groin hernia repairs. Use this animation in pelvic anatomy modules for medical and PA curricula, in orthopedic and sports medicine teaching on osteitis pubis and pelvic ring fractures, or as a clean insert for textbooks covering the hip bone (os coxae) and pubic symphysis biomechanics. It also fits radiology primers that bridge surface landmarks to pelvic radiographic assessment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
