Description
Medial aspect of an adult male foot and distal leg is presented, with the tibia positioned medial to the fibula and descending to form the medial malleolus at the ankle mortise. Inferior to the tibia sits the talus, articulating posteriorly with the calcaneus and anteriorly with the navicular, while the calcaneus projects posteriorly as the heel. Distal to the tarsus, the five metatarsals align toward the phalanges, with the hallux showing only proximal and distal phalanges and digits II to V showing proximal, middle, and distal segments. Joint margins are accentuated to indicate articular cartilage and capsuloligamentous interfaces. Clear bony landmarks. Medial views are the workhorse for teaching the longitudinal arch and the load-bearing column of the foot, where the talus acts as the keystone over the calcaneus and navicular and transfers body weight toward the first ray. That relationship becomes clinically concrete in posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, where collapse of the medial arch and talonavicular subluxation drive adult-acquired flatfoot, and in ankle trauma where medial malleolar involvement alters tibiotalar congruity.
