Description
Anterior thoracic landmarks dominate, with the manubrium and sternal body centered on the midline and the costal cartilages and anterior ribs curving laterally to form the thoracic cage. Superiorly, each clavicle runs from the sternoclavicular joint to the acromial end, where it meets the acromion at the acromioclavicular joint, while the proximal humerus descends inferolaterally from the glenohumeral region. Overlying these bony elements, pectoralis major spans from the sternum and clavicle toward the humerus, and the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder, framing the bicipital region of the arm. Key surface anatomy, rendered in correct relationship. This anterior orientation is the one most often used to teach sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joint alignment and to explain why the clavicle acts as a strut, holding the shoulder girdle lateral to the thorax. It also supports clinical discussion of rib and sternal injury patterns, from costochondral separation to sternal fracture after blunt trauma, and it gives a direct path to the landmarks used when positioning ECG electrodes or planning an anterior deltopectoral approach to the shoulder. The interplay between pectoralis major, deltoid, and proximal humerus makes the contour changes after clavicle fracture or AC joint separation easier to explain. Suitable for gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching materials covering the pectoral girdle, thoracic wall, and shoulder joint, and for publisher layouts that need a clear anterior reference for palpation landmarks and musculoskeletal exam documentation. It also fits patient-facing surgical consent graphics for clavicular fixation, shoulder arthroplasty approaches, and anterior chest wall procedures. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
