Description

Seen from a slightly anterolateral perspective, the distal tibia and fibula form the ankle mortise as they bracket the trochlea of the talus, with the lateral malleolus extending more distally than the medial malleolus. Inferior to the talus, the calcaneus projects posteriorly to form the heel, while anterior tarsals align toward the midfoot, leading into the five metatarsals that fan distally toward the phalanges. Medially, the first ray sits thicker and more robust, while the lateral rays taper toward the fifth metatarsal. Joint spaces are rendered as lighter bands at the tibiotalar, subtalar, midtarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal articulations. For teaching ankle and hindfoot mechanics, this angle clarifies how the talocrural joint permits dorsiflexion and plantarflexion while the subtalar joint under the talus contributes to inversion and eversion through the calcaneus. Clinically, the relationship between the distal fibula and talus is a key reference when discussing ankle sprain patterns, including anterior talofibular ligament injury with inversion and plantarflexion, and when assessing mortise congruency on radiographs after rotational ankle fractures.
