Description

Plantar anatomy of the foot is rendered with the tarsus, metatarsus, and phalanges articulated beneath layered soft tissues. The calcaneus and talus sit posterior and proximal, with the navicular, cuboid, and three cuneiforms arranged anteriorly to form the midfoot, then continuing distally into the five metatarsals and toe phalanges. Superficial and deep intrinsic muscles occupy the plantar compartments, while tendons from the posterior compartment of the leg course inferior to the malleolar region toward the midfoot and forefoot, crossing the joints they move. Plantar fascia and discrete ligament bands span medial to lateral, reinforcing the longitudinal and transverse arches. Clear landmarks. Arch mechanics become legible in this layout: the medial longitudinal arch, supported by the plantar aponeurosis and spring ligament complex beneath the talar head, contrasts with the more rigid lateral column anchored by the calcaneus and cuboid.
