Description
Running anteriorly from the inferior border of teres major, the brachial artery continues the axillary artery and descends in the anterior compartment of the arm along the medial side of the humerus. Proximally it lies medial to the biceps brachii and closely accompanies the median nerve, then courses toward the cubital fossa where it sits deep to the bicipital aponeurosis before bifurcating into the radial and ulnar arteries. Superficial veins of the upper limb, including the cephalic laterally and the basilic medially, can be appreciated in relation to the arterial tree against the bony landmarks of the clavicle, ribs, and humerus. Anterior presentation matters because the brachial artery is the standard site for noninvasive blood pressure measurement and a common access point for arterial cannulation, and its depth relative to the median cubital vein explains why inadvertent arterial puncture can occur during venipuncture at the elbow crease. The cubital fossa segment also frames key teaching relationships, with the brachial artery positioned medial to the biceps tendon and lateral to the median nerve, a pattern used during vascular repair after supracondylar humeral fractures.
