Description
Spanning the superficial and deep compartments of the female breast, the lymphatic vessels form a branching plexus within the glandular lobules and adipose tissue, converging toward a subareolar network beneath the nipple and areola. From this central plexus, collecting vessels course laterally toward the axillary basin and medially toward the parasternal region, running in close relationship to Cooper’s ligaments and the fibrofatty septa. Deep channels track posteriorly toward the pectoral fascia overlying pectoralis major. Orientation is clear. Breast lymphatics matter because they predict how malignant cells and inflammation spread, and they explain why clinical findings often localize away from the primary lesion. Lateral quadrants commonly drain to anterior (pectoral) axillary lymph nodes, while medial quadrants more often communicate with internal thoracic (parasternal) nodes, a pathway that can yield occult metastasis despite a clinically negative axilla.
