Description
Anterior and lateral aspects of an adult female body are rendered with semi-translucent integument, allowing the encephalon to be appreciated within the calvaria and the spinal cord traced through the vertebral canal. Cranial nerves originate from the brainstem and distribute across the face and neck while segmental spinal nerves exit the intervertebral foramina, forming the cervical and lumbosacral plexuses and continuing as peripheral nerves into the upper and lower limbs. From a proximal root and trunk near the vertebral column, the major nerves course distally along the extremities to the hands and feet in their expected neurovascular planes. Long pathways are easy to follow. For teaching neuroanatomy, this whole-body presentation clarifies how central nervous system structures relate to the peripheral nervous system, and it makes dermatomal and myotomal logic easier to explain than isolated regional plates. The relationship of the brachial plexus to the cervical spinal cord and the long continuation of the sciatic nerve from the lumbosacral roots into the posterior thigh provides context for common patterns of radiculopathy, sciatica, and traction injuries. It also supports discussions of upper versus lower motor neuron findings by anchoring symptoms to anatomic levels.
