Description

Across the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsal interossei occupy the intermetatarsal spaces between the first through fifth metatarsals, their bipennate bellies filling the gaps deep to the extensor tendons. Distally, the muscles narrow into tendons that pass toward the bases of the proximal phalanges and dorsal digital expansions, with the first dorsal interosseous oriented toward the hallux and the remaining muscles aligned with the lateral digits. Proximal tarsal elements (talus and calcaneus) and the ankle region frame the forefoot anatomy superiorly, while the long extensor tendons course anteriorly over the metatarsals toward the toes. Small but specific. Functionally, the dorsal interossei abduct the second through fourth toes relative to the second digit (the axial line of the foot), and they also contribute to metatarsophalangeal flexion with interphalangeal extension via the extensor hood mechanism. This dorsal perspective matters when you teach intrinsic muscle balance in claw toe and hammertoe deformities, where interosseous weakness and lumbrical imbalance allow the long extensors to hyperextend the MTP joints while the long flexors dominate the IP joints. It is also a practical orientation for understanding why deep compartment pathology in the forefoot can produce pain between metatarsals and why interdigital (Morton) neuroma symptoms localize to the intermetatarsal spaces even though the lesion is neural rather than muscular. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and lower-limb dissection labs, podiatry and physiotherapy teaching on intrinsic foot muscles, or surgical education materials discussing intermetatarsal approaches and toe deformity correction.
