Dominating the superior end of an adult female skeleton model, the cranium is isolated in blue, making the frontal bone and paired parietal bones read cleanly against the lighter axial skeleton below. Inferior to the cranial vault, the facial skeleton sits anterior to the cervical vertebral column, with the maxilla and mandible forming the anterior boundary of the upper aerodigestive tract. Along the lateral aspect of the skull, the temporal region is positioned anterolateral to the mastoid area and posterolateral to the orbit, while the occipital bone forms the posterior margin above the atlas.
