Description
Oriented in a left lateral view of the male skull, the external nasal branch of the anterior ethmoidal vein is traced as it emerges from the anterior ethmoidal region near the medial orbital wall, then courses anteriorly toward the nasal dorsum and tip. Along its path it lies superficial to the nasal bones and upper lateral cartilages, running inferior to the frontal bone and anterior to the ethmoid air cells, with its proximal segment tucked near the orbit and its distal tributaries spreading over the lower nose. Surrounding vascular context typically includes the anterior ethmoidal artery (in red) traveling with the nerve and vein through the frontoethmoidal region, plus adjacent facial venous channels over the maxilla and along the lateral nasal wall. Small but easy to miss. Clinically, this vein matters because it sits at the junction of the orbit, ethmoid, and superficial nasal venous drainage, a corridor where infection and bleeding can move between compartments with little resistance. The external nasal branch communicates with the angular and facial veins, providing a venous route implicated in nasal vestibulitis and midface infections that can track toward the orbit, and it is a frequent source of brisk bleeding when the anterior ethmoidal vessels are injured during endoscopic sinus surgery or trauma near the medial canthus. Its relationship to the frontoethmoidal suture line is a practical landmark when teaching the anterior ethmoidal artery ligation corridor. Use this lateral plate in head and neck anatomy blocks, ENT and oculoplastics teaching decks, and surgical atlases covering endoscopic ethmoidectomy, management of epistaxis, and medial orbital wall approaches where anterior ethmoidal injury is a known complication.
