Description
Seen in left lateral profile, the external nasal branch of the anterior ethmoidal artery exits the orbit near the frontoethmoidal region, passes anterior to the medial orbital wall, and descends onto the dorsum of the nose in the distal nasal segment. Surrounding bony landmarks include the frontal bone, nasal bone, maxilla, and ethmoid complex, with the orbit and nasal bridge providing the key topography for its surface course. Nearby facial vessels are shown in red and blue, with the nasal vasculature positioned anterior to the maxilla and superior to the oral cavity and dentition. Small-caliber branches track along the nasal sidewall toward the tip. A tight corridor. Clinically, this vessel matters because it links the ophthalmic artery system to the external nose and anastomoses with branches of the facial artery, a pattern that explains brisk bleeding from dorsal nasal lacerations and why hemostasis can be stubborn in that region. Endoscopic sinus surgeons also care about the parent anterior ethmoidal artery as it traverses the ethmoidal roof, where injury can produce orbital hematoma, troublesome epistaxis, or cerebrospinal fluid leak when adjacent skull base anatomy is violated. For injectors and reconstructive surgeons, the external nasal branch marks a hazard zone along the nasal dorsum, where inadvertent intra-arterial injection can propagate retrograde emboli into the ophthalmic circulation. Ischemia can be fast.
