Description
Positioned on the posterolateral abdominal wall, the external oblique muscles are highlighted bilaterally, with their muscle bellies draping inferiorly from the lateral ribs toward the iliac crest and transitioning anteriorly into a broad aponeurosis. From a posterior oblique angle, their posterior border is seen approaching the anterior layer of the thoracolumbar fascia, just lateral to the lumbar spinous processes and erector spinae mass. Superiorly, the slips align with the lower costal cartilages, while inferiorly the fibers converge toward the iliac crest and the region of the inguinal ligament, which lies more anterior and inferior than this viewpoint fully exposes.
