Fascia of the Superficial Volar Compartment, Medial View

Seen from the medial aspect of a male right forearm and hand, the superficial volar compartment fascia forms a thin sheath immediately deep to the skin over the palm and distal forearm, blending proximally with antebrachial fascia and distally with the palmar aponeurosis. Medially, it tracks along the ulnar border toward the hypothenar eminence, while laterally it approaches the thenar region across the central palm. Deep to this superficial fascia, the flexor tendons course distally toward the metacarpals and phalanges, with the carpal region acting as the transition zone where fascial planes tighten and tether. A medial perspective is useful when you need to teach or plan approaches that respect the ulnar-sided soft tissue layers, including the relationship of superficial fascia to the hypothenar pad and the ulnar neurovascular corridor. This is where surgical dissection can go wrong: an ulnar-sided laceration or hypothenar incision may look superficial at the skin, yet it can violate fascial planes and expose the ulnar artery or ulnar nerve as they enter the hand near Guyon’s canal. It matters.
