Description
Running deep along the medial thigh, the femoral artery continues from the external iliac artery distal to the inguinal ligament and courses within the femoral triangle before entering the adductor canal. A medial perspective brings the relationship to the femoral vein into focus, with the vein lying medial to the artery proximally and tending to pass posterior to it more distally as both descend toward the adductor hiatus. Proximal branches such as the profunda femoris artery and circumflex femoral vessels are logically encountered near the femoral artery’s posterolateral aspect, while distal continuation toward the popliteal artery is oriented inferiorly toward the knee. Clear color separation distinguishes arteries from the accompanying venous return. Clinically, this view maps directly onto femoral vascular access, where palpation of the femoral pulse at the mid-inguinal point guides arterial puncture while the adjacent femoral vein and femoral canal remain at risk if the trajectory drifts medially. Needle placement too distal, within the adductor canal, can complicate hemostasis and increases the chance of hematoma tracking along fascial planes, and unrecognized variants in the profunda femoris origin can explain unexpected bleeding during groin procedures. A practical landmark. It also supports teaching of occlusive disease patterns, since atherosclerotic narrowing in the superficial femoral artery often declares itself as calf claudication and reduced distal pulses.
