Description
Arising from the profunda femoris (deep femoral artery) on the posterolateral aspect of the proximal thigh, the lateral circumflex femoral artery gives off its descending branch, which then courses inferiorly along the lateral border of the femur. From a medial viewing angle, the vessel’s origin is seen proximal to the shaft, with the descending artery tracking distally toward the region of the vastus lateralis and the lateral knee, where it participates in the genicular anastomosis. The femur remains the dominant skeletal landmark, with the hip joint superiorly and the knee joint inferiorly providing clear proximal to distal orientation. Small muscular branches may be suggested along the artery’s path. Clean landmarks. This arterial segment matters because it is a common pedicle in anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap harvest, where perforators from the descending branch supply the skin and fascia, and where anatomic variation in origin from the femoral artery rather than profunda femoris can change dissection strategy. Orthopedic and trauma teams also encounter it in proximal femoral exposures and in approaches around the lateral intermuscular septum, where uncontrolled bleeding can be brisk and deep. Its distal contribution around the lateral knee is a useful correlate when teaching collateral circulation during superficial femoral artery occlusion. Ideal for surgical anatomy teaching in plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedic approaches to the lateral thigh, and radiology or anatomy coursework that needs a named-branch roadmap rather than generic “thigh vessels.” It also fits well in atlas plates, operative technique manuals, and patient education materials explaining flap donor-site blood supply.
