Description
Running deep in the posterior compartment of the male left leg, the fibular (peroneal) artery descends close to the medial surface of the fibula, typically arising from the posterior tibial artery via the tibioperoneal trunk. Proximal in the calf it lies posterior to tibialis posterior and flexor hallucis longus, then tracks distally toward the lateral malleolar region while the posterior tibial artery remains more medial on its course to the plantar foot. Superficial venous pathways, including the great saphenous vein along the medial leg, contrast with the deep arterial channels that accompany the venae comitantes. Arterial inflow and venous return are both mapped into the foot’s dorsal and plantar networks. Teaching the fibular artery matters because it is the quiet workhorse of collateral circulation in infra-popliteal disease, often maintaining perfusion to the lateral ankle and calcaneus when the anterior or posterior tibial arteries are occluded.
