Description
Seen in lateral profile, the frontal bone occupies the anterior calvaria and continues inferiorly into the supraorbital region, forming the roof of the orbit and the superior orbital rim. Posteriorly, its squamous part meets the parietal bone at the coronal suture, while inferior and posterior margins contribute to the temporal fossa via the frontal process of the zygomatic bone and the zygomatic process of the frontal bone. The nasal part of the frontal bone sits superior to the nasal bones and frontal process of the maxilla, framing the frontonasal region. Clean landmarks. For teaching cranial orientation, the lateral frontal bone is where you can tie surface anatomy of the forehead to deep boundaries of the anterior cranial fossa and orbit without losing the key suture relationships. Frontal bone fractures often extend into the frontal sinus and the superior orbital roof, a pattern that raises concern for cerebrospinal fluid leak, orbital roof disruption, and injury to the supraorbital nerve at the supraorbital notch or foramen.
