Arterial branches course along the male colon from the caecum and ascending colon on the subject’s right, across the transverse colon superiorly, and down the left-sided descending and sigmoid colon toward the rectum. Proximally, the superior mesenteric artery gives rise to the ileocolic, right colic, and middle colic arteries, which run within the mesocolon and then divide into marginal branches that track close to the colonic wall. Distally, the inferior mesenteric artery supplies the left colic and sigmoid arteries, continuing as the superior rectal artery, with the marginal artery of Drummond forming a continuous arcade along the mesenteric border. Appendices epiploicae and haustra are rendered as surface landmarks. This arterial map matters most where perfusion is least forgiving. The splenic flexure (Griffiths’ point) sits at the junction of middle colic and left colic territories, while the rectosigmoid junction (Sudeck’s point) lies at the transition from sigmoid branches to the superior rectal artery, and both are classic watershed regions for ischemic colitis during hypotension, aortic surgery, or low-flow states. For oncologic colectomy, the relationship of named colic vessels to the marginal artery guides high ligation and lymphadenectomy while aiming to preserve collateral flow to the remaining bowel.
