Description
Centered in the thorax, the sectioned heart is oriented to emphasize the base, where the left atrium sits posterior to the right atrium and receives the pulmonary veins, while the great vessels emerge superiorly from the ventricles. The ascending aorta arises from the left ventricle anterior and slightly rightward of the left atrium, and the pulmonary trunk leaves the right ventricle anteriorly before bifurcating toward the pulmonary arteries. Within the cut surface, the interventricular septum separates right and left ventricles, and the atrioventricular valves (tricuspid on the right, mitral on the left) lie inferior to the atria at the atrioventricular junction. Parts of the rib cage frame the cardiac silhouette in situ. This base-of-heart orientation matters because it matches what surgeons and imagers use to localize the left atrium, pulmonary venous ostia, and the outflow tracts, structures that define safe planes during procedures such as atrial fibrillation ablation and mitral valve surgery. Spatial relationships at the base also explain common compressive and fistulous patterns, for example left atrial enlargement producing posterior mass effect on the esophagus, or pathology that tracks along the aortic root and pulmonary trunk in acute aortic syndromes. A teaching favorite. Seeing the aorta and pulmonary trunk relative to the atria makes the cardiac “base” concept stick. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules to anchor in situ orientation, and in radiology or echocardiography teaching to correlate cardiac chambers and valves with cross-sectional anatomy.
