Description
Seen in right lateral profile, the male thorax is presented with the rib cage forming an anterolateral shield over the mediastinum, with intercostal muscles occupying the intercostal spaces and the sternum lying anterior to the cardiac silhouette. Posteriorly, the scapula overlies the superior ribs, marking the transition toward the posterior thoracic wall. Within the thoracic cavity, the lung parenchyma occupies the pleural compartments lateral to the mediastinum, while the heart sits medial and slightly anterior, with the ventricular mass (myocardium) projecting toward the anteroinferior chest and great vessels coursing superiorly toward the thoracic inlet. Right lateral orientation matters because it matches how clinicians mentally map chest trauma and many common access routes: ribs and costal cartilages distribute blunt force, while fractures of the middle ribs can create sharp fragments that lacerate lung, cause pneumothorax or hemothorax, and secondarily compromise cardiac function by hypoxia and mediastinal shift.
