Description
Captured in a transverse section through an adult male heart during ventricular systole, the thick-walled left ventricle occupies a more posterior and leftward position relative to the thinner right ventricle, with the interventricular septum forming the shared medial wall. Superiorly, the semilunar valves sit at the ventricular outflow tracts, the aortic valve aligned centrally with the left ventricular outflow and the pulmonary valve positioned more anterior and leftward. Inferior to them, the atrioventricular valves span the atrioventricular junctions, with the mitral valve guarding the left atrioventricular orifice and the tricuspid valve on the right, their leaflets directed toward the ventricular cavities as the myocardium contracts. Papillary muscle bases and trabeculated ventricular endocardium are implied by the internal relief of the chambers. Systole is the moment when valvular competence matters most, and this cross-sectional perspective makes it easier to teach how rising intraventricular pressure closes the mitral and tricuspid valves while opening the aortic and pulmonary valves.
