Description

Seen from a lateral perspective, the right atrium forms the superior and rightward cardiac border, tapering inferiorly to the tricuspid valve orifice that opens into the right ventricle. The right ventricle lies anterior to the right atrium and wraps toward the acute margin, its free wall leading superiorly into the right ventricular outflow tract (conus arteriosus) and pulmonary trunk. Superior vena cava and inferior vena cava enter the right atrium on its posterior aspect, while the aortic root sits more posterior and central relative to the pulmonary trunk. Coronary vessels course in the atrioventricular groove and along the right margin, tracing the epicardial surface of the white-rendered myocardium. This angle helps you teach what the surface anatomy does not: how much of the anterior (sternocostal) surface is right ventricle, even when the left ventricle dominates the apex. It also matches real operative and procedural orientation for right-sided access, from cannulation of the venae cavae during cardiopulmonary bypass to tricuspid valve surgery through a right atriotomy. In pathology, dilation of the right atrium and right ventricle in pulmonary hypertension or severe tricuspid regurgitation reshapes the right heart border, a change that correlates with chest radiograph findings and echocardiographic chamber measurements. Clear landmarks. Use this artwork for cardiothoracic anatomy labs, physiology lectures on right-sided preload and pulmonary circulation, and textbook figures explaining venous return into the right atrium and ejection through the pulmonary valve. It also fits catheterization and electrophysiology teaching, where the right atrium, tricuspid annulus, and right ventricular outflow tract guide ablation targets and lead placement.
