Presented in a ventral orientation, this transverse section of the male heart exposes all four chambers with the right atrium and right ventricle positioned to the viewer’s left and the left atrium and left ventricle to the viewer’s right. The tricuspid valve spans the right atrioventricular orifice, while the mitral (bicuspid) valve lies more laterally and slightly posterior between the left atrium and the thick-walled left ventricle. Superior in the section, the great vessels occupy the base of the heart, with the ascending aorta larger and more robust than the pulmonary trunk, and color coding distinguishes oxygenated systemic outflow from deoxygenated pulmonary outflow. Papillary muscle contours and trabeculae help orient the ventricular cavities. A clear internal map.
