Description
Lateral right thoracic anatomy is presented with the rib cage in the foreground and the mediastinal organs layered deep to it. Ribs and costal cartilages arc anteriorly from the thoracic vertebrae, with intercostal spaces separating them, while the lung forms a broad pleural surface that drapes over the pericardium and heart. Medially, the cardiac silhouette sits between the lungs, with the right ventricle and adjacent myocardium positioned anterior to the more posterior left-sided chambers, and great vessels coursing superiorly toward the root of the neck. The scapula appears posterolateral on the thoracic wall as a surface landmark for posterior ribs. This relationship between lung, pleura, and heart is the anatomic basis for where clinicians can and cannot safely pass instruments through the chest wall. The view supports teaching on cardiac auscultation windows and pericardiocentesis planning, because the lung normally covers much of the heart and the pericardial sac becomes accessible only where the pleural reflections leave a bare area (classically near the left 5th to 6th intercostal space close to the sternum). It also maps cleanly onto right-sided approaches for tube thoracostomy, where staying superior to the rib protects the intercostal neurovascular bundle that runs along the inferior costal groove.
