Description
Centered within a semi-transparent male thorax, the trachea descends from the cervical region into the superior mediastinum and bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which branch into lobar and segmental bronchi within each lung. The heart occupies the middle mediastinum, sitting medial to the lungs and anterior to the vertebral column, with the right ventricle positioned more anteriorly and the left ventricle forming much of the left lateral cardiac border. Great vessels are suggested in continuity with the cardiac silhouette, with the pulmonary trunk and pulmonary veins relating directly to the hilar regions where the bronchi enter the lungs. Skeletal landmarks, including ribs and sternum, remain faintly visible in an x-ray style to anchor depth and position. Spatially, this pairing of the bronchial tree and myocardium helps clarify why airway and cardiac findings overlap on chest radiography and CT, from cardiomegaly obscuring the left lower lobe to hilar enlargement altering the perceived bronchovascular pattern.
