Description
Positioned in the mid cervical spine, the C3 vertebra is highlighted against adjacent vertebrae, with the vertebral body lying anterior to the vertebral arch and enclosing the vertebral foramen posteriorly. Laterally, the pedicles bridge the posterior body to the laminae, forming the margins of the spinal canal, while the transverse processes project on each side toward the foramen transversarium. Posteriorly, the spinous process extends from the junction of the laminae, and the superior and inferior articular processes align to form the paired zygapophysial (facet) joints above and below. Alignment is shown in a lateral profile, so the relative anterior to posterior depth and cervical lordosis read clearly. C3 sits at a clinically busy level, where subtle changes in vertebral morphology can matter for stability and nerve root passage. Foraminal narrowing at C2 to C3 or C3 to C4, from uncovertebral osteophytes and facet arthrosis, can correlate with C3 radiculopathy, often presenting as upper neck pain radiating toward the occiput and mastoid region rather than the classic upper limb pattern.
