Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered with the lungs superimposed within a semi-transparent chest of a female child, allowing the airway and lobar surfaces to be read in situ. The trachea descends in the midline from the lower neck to the carina, where the right and left main bronchi diverge inferolaterally into their respective hila. On the right, the superior, middle, and inferior lobes are separated by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left lung shows superior and inferior lobes divided by the oblique fissure, with the anterior cardiac notch contouring the medial border. Peripheral parenchyma is presented as fine respiratory texture, implying the distal bronchioles and alveoli distributed toward the costal surfaces. This perspective supports pediatric teaching because children have smaller airways relative to lung volume, so modest mucosal edema can narrow the bronchi and shift work of breathing quickly. Lobar orientation and bronchial branching also underpin aspiration patterns and atelectasis distribution, with the more vertical right main bronchus predisposing to right-sided foreign body lodgment and recurrent right middle lobe collapse.
