Description
Sectioned cranial vault and facial skeleton expose the endocranial surface of a male skull, with the middle meningeal artery traced in red as it enters the middle cranial fossa via the foramen spinosum. From its proximal segment on the greater wing of the sphenoid, the vessel courses laterally and superiorly, then divides into anterior (frontal) and posterior (parietal) branches that run in grooves on the internal surface of the squamous temporal bone and parietal bone. Blue venous channels parallel parts of this network along the dura. Bony landmarks such as the orbit, nasal cavity, maxillary dentition, and cranial foramina remain visible for orientation. Surgeons and trainees focus on this pattern because the middle meningeal artery is the classic source of an epidural (extradural) hematoma after lateral skull trauma, most often where its anterior branch crosses the pterion and lies close to the inner table. The depiction of arterial grooves on the temporal and parietal bones helps connect surface injury mechanisms with intracranial bleeding, and it also supports teaching of why fracture lines through the squamous temporal bone or sphenoid can be clinically disproportionate. Color separation of arteries and veins makes the dural vascular territory easier to interpret when correlating with CT bone windows, angiography, or middle meningeal artery embolization planning. Neuroanatomy, head and neck gross anatomy, and neurosurgical approach modules can use this artwork to anchor lessons on the middle cranial fossa, foramen spinosum, dural blood supply, and meningeal vessel relationships to calvarial sutures.
