Description
Anterior facial soft tissues are rendered with a transparent overlay that reveals the underlying skull in anatomical position, including the frontal bone, paired nasal bones, maxillae with the alveolar processes and teeth, and the mandible forming the inferior facial contour. Within the midface, the piriform aperture opens into the nasal cavity, while the orbits are framed superiorly by the frontal bone and laterally by the zygomatic bones, with the maxilla contributing to the orbital floor. Inferior to the mandible, the upper cervical spine is visible in the neck, with the cervical vertebrae aligned along the midline deep to the pharyngeal region. Hair and skin remain intact superficially. Bones guide the surface. Orbital anatomy benefits from an anterior presentation because it clarifies the bony margins surgeons and radiologists use when localizing facial fractures and planning reconstruction. The maxillary contribution to the orbital floor and the zygomaticomaxillary region are common sites of blowout and tripod fractures, where disruption can correlate with enophthalmos, diplopia, and infraorbital nerve paresthesia along the cheek and upper lip. Dental anatomy in the maxilla and mandible also situates the relationship between alveolar bone and the lower facial skeleton, a frequent concern in trauma, infection spread, and dentoalveolar surgery.
