Description
Anterior abdominal wall anatomy is presented with the superficial fascia emphasized as two strata, a fatty superficial layer (Camper fascia) continuous with the subcutaneous tissue of the thorax, and a deeper membranous layer (Scarpa fascia) that lies immediately superficial to the rectus sheath and the aponeuroses of the lateral abdominal muscles. Over the midline, the linea alba forms a fibrous raphe between the paired rectus abdominis muscles, while the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis contribute aponeurotic fibers laterally that course medially to enclose the rectus. Pectoralis major and the upper limb musculature may remain partially visible superiorly, helping orient the transition from thoracic to abdominal superficial connective tissues. For teaching, this layered arrangement matters because Camper and Scarpa fascia behave differently in trauma and in surgery: Scarpa’s membranous layer can create defined planes for dissection and can also limit the spread of superficial fluid. Urine from an anterior urethral injury may track into the superficial perineal space and then ascend deep to Scarpa fascia onto the lower anterior abdominal wall, yet it cannot pass into the thigh because Scarpa fascia continues as fascia lata below the inguinal region. Surgeons also exploit these planes during lower abdominal incisions and abdominoplasty, where preservation or intentional release of the membranous layer influences flap mobility and seroma risk.
