Anterior thoracic wall anatomy is presented with the pectoral fascia (fascia pectoralis) rendered as a thin aponeurotic sheath investing the pectoralis major. The fascia spans across the chest from the sternum medially toward the anterior axillary fold laterally, where it continues with the axillary fascia and becomes functionally continuous with the clavipectoral fascia deep to the deltopectoral groove. Superiorly it relates to the clavicle and the infraclavicular region, while inferiorly it blends toward the fascia of the upper rectus sheath and the superficial fascia over the costal margin. Deltoid contours and proximal brachial musculature frame the shoulder and arm, reinforcing the fascia’s relationship to the deltopectoral interval. Pectoral fascia matters because it is the principal surgical and radiologic plane over the pectoralis major, separating the muscle from the breast and providing the layer that is elevated during mastectomy and many chest wall exposures, with the lateral border guiding the dissection toward the anterior axillary fold. It also defines the superficial boundary of the retromammary space, a practical concept when teaching breast mobility and when interpreting spread of infection or fluid collections along fascial planes.
