Description

Anterior male trunk and lower face are rendered with the pectoral fascia emphasized as a continuous connective tissue sheath overlying pectoralis major. Superiorly it blends with the superficial fascia of the neck at the clavicular region, while inferomedially it approaches the sternum and costal cartilages, and laterally it thickens toward the anterior axillary fold where it continues as the axillary fascia. Beneath the fascia, the pectoralis major contours dominate the chest wall, with the deltoid and proximal brachium suggested at the shoulder margin and facial mimetic muscles visible superior to the thorax. Pectoral fascia matters because it defines the surgical and anesthetic planes of the anterior chest and axilla, and it is the named layer you meet immediately deep to subcutaneous tissue during approaches for mastectomy, pacemaker pocket creation, and axillary dissection. Its lateral continuity with axillary fascia influences how fluid, hematoma, or infection can track from the breast or anterior chest wall toward the axilla, and how traction on the pectoralis major transmits to the skin envelope.
